Bonos JKD and Kaju Rules

1.    Pay your dues on time every month.  Dues secure your spot in the membership of the school.  Full dues are due each month whether or not you go on vacation or otherwise miss class.

2.    If you are unable to come to a class you regularly attend, call to let GM know, since this affects other students being paired up for drills.  Either email GM or call the karate phone.  If you arrive more than 30 minutes late you will only be given credit for half a day of training, if you are 1 hour late you will receive no credit.  If you arrive  late 2 pushups for every minute   The amount of pushups is cut in half if you call ahead of time and let Professor know you'll be late.

3.    Do NOT wear street shoes on the mats.  This means shoes must be transported in, not worn in to avoid bringing in gum and rocks onto the mats.

4.    Come to class clean and in appropriate attire.

       Black gi pants

School T-shirt (if you forget your shirt, you do 50 pushups)

       Martial arts shoes

Belt (if you forget your belt, you do 100 pushups)

       Mouthpiece

       Cup

Training equipment, as necessary (appropriate and approved; any substitutes must be approved to prevent injury)

5.

6.    Shake hands with GM Bono and other Black Belts (in order of rank) before and after class.

7.    If a senior ranking Black Belt from the school or the KAA enters the building, the person leading class will stop instruction, and tell the class to set and salute.

8.    Be courteous and respectful at all times to your instructors and fellow students.

9.    Salute your training partner when free-sparring together.

Boxing:              Before the match, tap both gloves together.

After a break, acknowledge a well executed technique by

            tapping left gloves together.

After the match, tap both gloves together and otherwise

            show appreciation and respect.

Knife:            Before the match, tap flats of knives together (1) right to

left, (2) left to right, (3) ends of handles (punos)

            criss-crossing.

After the match, shake hands or otherwise show

            appreciation and respect.

Grappling:            Before the match, gently slap right hands together.

After the match, shake hands or otherwise show

            appreciation and respect.

10.   Do NOT apologize for using a technique correctly.

11.   Not performing techniques hard and strong disrespects your training partners ability.

12.   If you are injured, let the instructor know before you leave the training floor.

13.   Learn the Kajukenbo Prayer.

14.   The class will circle up for closing at the end of class.

When circling up after class, position yourself according to rank, starting with the highest rank and moving counterclockwise to the lowest rank.

Get into position kneeling down on your right knee, right hand in a fist on the ground and head lowered.  The instructor (usually Professor Bono) asks someone to lead the class in the Kajukenbo Prayer.

After the Kajukenbo Prayer is recited responsively, the instructor tells the class to come halfway up, kneeling on both knees in an upright position.  Each person removes his/her belt and uses it to wipes his/her brow.

The instructor tells the class to stand in set position.  The instructor (usually Professor) will ask the class to salute one another.  The highest ranking student then tells the class to set and salute the instructor, using his/her title (i.e. “Set and salute the Professor before you.”).   If more than one black belt is present, the next highest ranking student tells the class to set and salute the next highest ranking Black Belt, using his/her title (i.e. “Set and salute the Black Belt before you.”).  This continues until all of the Black Belts have been saluted.

In order from highest to lowest rank, everyone shakes hands.

15.  Participate in keeping the school clean.

Help clean the mats, which need to be swept, sprayed, and wiped after class.

Help get out and put away school gear and equipment.

Remove your personal training equipment, water bottles, and other belongings from the training space after class.

16.  Check to see that windows are closed, doors are locked, lights are off, and alarm is set.

17.  Class starts at 6:15pm.  Once you’re there, warm yourself up with pinans, punch arts, and grab arts.  Students should be warmed up for when GM starts class.

18.  While training, keep conversations to a minimum as not to distract

serious students.  When Grandmaster or another instructor is teaching, there’s no

       talking so everyone can learn.

19.  Blood and bruises are no reason to panic.  They are badges of honor.

20.  Students who train actively for at least 40 training sessions will be considered students of the school.

21.  School emblems are for school use only.  Students who train at the school are awarded with the use of a symbol by Professor.

22.  The warrior kanji and Bono’s school logo are designated for active

training students only.  Use of these logos outside the school will not be

sanctioned and therefore, disrespects the hard training and dedication of

       current students.

23.  The Bono Kajukenbo tat is authorized to those who have attained their

black belt at the school, which would include the following:

Rick Robles

Duane Fischer
